Grades: early childhood 1-3

Theme: persistence and accuracy catch up with speed.

Overall Objective:

The student knows the advantages between fast and persistent pursuit.

Operational Objectives:

The student recognizes the difference between fast and accurate aiming and knows their advantages and disadvantages.

The student learns the principles of various physical exercises.

The student learns about his current physical abilities and capabilities.

The student realizes that others have different abilities and capabilities and that this is not a bad thing.

Points of the core curriculum:

Learning objectives – general requirements: I.1-5. IV.1-3,6,8,12.

Teaching content – specific requirements: I.1. I.2.1-3. I.3. II.6.9. VII.1.4. IX.1. XI.2.2.

Working time: 2 lesson hours

Methods and forms of work: physical exercise, discussion, group work, reading, play

Course of action:

As part of the gym class:

  1. We perform stretching warm-up exercises.
    1. We can use Yoga activity packages from Planet Ziuuu as part of them.
  2. Include Fit Exercise activity (Planet Ziuuu).
    1. We instruct the children that they are to perform the exercises shown by the Creature: as many repetitions as possible in the given time.
    2. After finishing, we give them a moment to catch their breaths and ask them how they felt, what they experienced during the exercise, and afterwards.
    3. We again include the same activity, but this time we instruct the children to perform the exercises slowly and exactly as the creature depicts them.
    4. When they have finished, we again ask about their feelings and sensations, such as what muscles they tensed during the exercise (this can also be asked during the repetitions). We also ask if they noticed any difference between the first and second series. It is worth noting that sensations may vary slightly from person to person.
  3. We hold races.
    1. There are two races to run: short (e.g. one lap) and long distance (e.g. 6 laps). Their size should be adjusted according to the conditions at our disposal and the known physical abilities of the students. It would be good if the second race is long enough that they can’t keep sprinting the whole time, which will be useful in the second part.
    2. After finishing both, we ask which race suits them better and what strategy they adopted to complete it and in this one, how it worked out.
  4. We conduct final stretching exercises.

As part of classroom activities:

  1. Discussion:
    1. Recall the different strategies for winning races that took place in the gym. E.g.: a fast start and what happened next, when they ran out of strength and slowed down, slow with a steady running speed.
    2. Open the pdf of the chart on your device for editing
      1. Each student marks with his color how he ran throughout the long race at each successive lap.
      2. You can consider whether my fast = your fast, and talk about differences in students’ abilities. If someone doesn’t run fast, you can point out the stamina or other abilities the student has.
  2. We read the Fable of the Hare and the Tortoise.
    1. Depending on the class, the teacher reads, a selected student reads, students read one at a time or read silently on their own.
  3. In addition to the strategy for the student races, we write down the strategy for the turtle and hare race.
  4. We look for hares and tortoises in our classroom. Based on the chart made or by raising your hand.
    1. Someone can’t fit in? Why? You can help him assign himself or together come up with an animal that could run the race that way.
  5. We divide the class into turtles and hares.
    1. Each group must prepare the characteristics of an exemplary tortoise or hare and the pros and cons of such goal pursuit. Not only in the context of racing, but also when it comes to achieving other things, such as: how they would do their big homework, how they would study for a test, how they would clean their room, how they would get ready for school in the morning, and so on.
    2. If there are other pets in the class, they can form a separate group or join one of the two groups.
    3. Both groups speak up – discussion.
    4. How children behave in different situations.

    1. Children test their speed and accuracy among themselves.
